Paris I {Europe 2012} | Saginaw Photographer

Jul 3, 2012

Does anyone else think that pigeons are filthy disgusting animals? I will never understand people who do this…Opposite this photo people were holding pieces of bread getting the birds to land on them. Gross.

So I may have stalked this adorable man and his grandchildren because I HAD to photograph them!! Like seriously the cutest thing ever!

Lion statues seemed to be everywhere!

This seems like one of the coolest places to be buried. I love that there could be a grave someone who died in 2011 next to one from the 1800s. Not gonna lie, when I die, I want one of these big walk in headstones – that way when people in the future walk by it they can think I was someone special. 😉 Better start saving now….hahah

So the Catacombs were quite possibly one of the most interesting things I’ve ever seen. After walking down a winding staircase, for what seems like forever, straight down past the subway and the sewers you come to a narrow winding tunnel (about 1.5km) you come to the bones. The catacombs were once the site of over mined rock quarries that had been shut down and reinforced in the late 1700s. As many Parisians could not afford to be buried in crypts or cemeteries, that were being overcrowded anyways, they began the practice of mass inhumation in a central location. However, as the bodies decomposed bacteria and lime (used to speed the rate of decomposition) would seep into the water supply. So the decision was made to use the abandoned quarries to house the bones from the overcrowded cemeteries and mass graves. The bones of 6 million Parisians lie in organized piles in the catacombs. I could not even being to fathom the sheer quantities of bones that 6 million bodies would contain. It seriously blew my mind – especially to know that there were parts of the catacombs that were blocked off.

Is it wrong that this lone chair barred in among the bones was creepier than the bones themselves?

I have mixed feelings about the catacombs – I realize that it’s consecrated ground but it’s weird to think that these bones were once people and now their bodies are torn apart and will spend the rest of eternity being gawked at by tourists. Not sure how I would feel about that.

Zombie Patrick. Such a freak.

On a bridge near the Musee D’Orsay, you could purchase a lock, write you and your love’s names on it, and throw the key into the river – locks of love hehe. There had to be THOUSANDS of these locks. It was pretty cool.

Arc de Triomph. 278 steps to see a view of Paris. 😉
